Tragic Passing of John Smith

Well known and respected horseman John Smith was tragically killed in an accident on his property in late September 2011. He was only 61.

John was well known for his association with Magnum Skipper, who won a NSW Sires Stakes 3YO Open Final in 1991 beating Joshua Tree and Albibby Boy.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Jane, family and friends.

Horse Surfing

HORSE-surfing is all the rage in Europe, but could you imagine this happening on Bondi Beach? Now that would be a Bondi Rescue episode worth tuning in for.

Popular in Baule, on the Atlantic west coast of France, horse-surfing sees surfers travelling across waves at speeds of up to 56km/h while attached to a galloping stallion on the beach.

These are not Horse Rescue Australia horses, but Horse Rescue has been contacted by their owners trying to find them new homes.

Regrettably Horse Rescue cannot take on every horse they hear of, so have decided to offer a service to those people genuinely trying to rehome their horses (ie: not sell them).

Upgrade for Royal Randwick

THE Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney is to receive a $170 million upgrade, the NSW government says.

Minister for Planning, Tony Kelly, today said the projects put forward by the Australian Jockey Club would transform Royal Randwick into a state-of-the-art world class racecourse.

School Holidays at Mowbray Park Farm

CHILDREN and the whole family can get up close with the animals and learn more about sustainable farming these school holidays at Mowbray Park Farm. At the farm you can either stay overnight or simply get involved in one of the many activities open to daytrippers. You might end up learning to crack a stock whip or cook some damper around the fire, or spend time down at the animal nursery feeding the animals and milking a cow.

“If you are doing a stay on short notice you can contact us for a special offer." A day at the farm with lunch costs $57 for adults, $37 for 5-14-year-olds and $27 for 1-4-year-olds. A day visit with a one-hour horse ride (8 years and over), is $97 for adults and $77 for 8-14-year-olds. The farm is at 745 Barkers Lodge Rd, Picton. Details: 4680 9243.

Gilbert gallops in to rescue Hannah Dodd

HANNAH Dodd's wish has come true and this week the teenager from Arcadia is in Melbourne competing on a borrowed horse to qualify for the world equestrian games. Her plea for a replacement horse after her steed Lucifer's Dream was injured was answered by Jessica Clark, 13, and her sister Jasmin, 11, who have loaned her their horse UQG Gallahad known as Gilbert.

The 17-year-old equestrian has sacral agenisis, a rare form of spina bifida. She has limited ability to walk and has joints that dislocate regularly. She got on a horse at the age of four and has won many riding awards including the 2009 able-bodied NSW Reserve Champion Elementary Horse.

  Lara's Ready to Wrangle

National campdrafting champion Lara Garlick will return home to Camden this week to tame some four-legged beasts. She will compete in the Cumberland Campdraft Club's annual draft at the Bicentennial Equestrian Park on Sheathers Lane.

Garlick (nee Iddon), a former Camden High School student, won the women's final at the 2010 Australia Bushmen's Campdraft and Rodeo Championships in Barraba, near Tamworth, last month.

Local Jousters in World Clash

What child doesn't want to grow up to be a knight in shining armour? So says the Australasian Jousting Champion Phil Oliver and he's ours. The Camden knight along with fellow competitor Fiona Hudson, of The Oaks, will help make up the Australian contingent in this year's St George's Day International Jousting Tournament, as part of the annual Ironfest.
